Our History
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Roman Catholic religious communities established parishes, schools and hospitals in South Philadelphia to serve growing groups of Catholic immigrants. Msgr. Aloysius Farrell, a former pastor of St. Monica Parish, championed the desire of many South Philadelphia residents to build a Catholic nursing home there as well. Along with his aunt, Mary Townsend, he set aside funds dedicated for that purpose.
After many years of searching in vain for a suitable location at which to build, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia eventually acquired an existing facility and chose to operate it under Catholic sponsorship.
In September 2004, the former Methodist Hospital Nursing Center officially became St. Monica Manor in recognition of the important contribution of the Farrell-Townsend trust to the realization of this long-held dream. Today, St. Monica Manor provides long term care for the elderly in a caring, supportive environment.
